In this wild psychological thriller, Millie Perkins (The Diary of Anne Frank, TV's Elvis) stars as Molly, whose obsession with television personalities and myths about the sea masks a tragic history of childhood sexual abuse. Directed by Matt Cimber (Butterfly, Candy Tangerine Man), THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA was threatened with an X rating by the MPAA upon its initial release due to its graphic violence and startling incestuous imagery. Still shocking today, the film is raised above the exploitation level by an audacious and brilliant central performance by Perkins, a remarkably literary and personal script by her then-husband Robert Thom (Wild in the Streets, Death Race 2000), and scenic widescreen photography by first-time cinematographer Dean Cundey (Halloween, The Thing, Jurassic Park). A much-coveted cult collectable from the early days of home video, WITCH has now been rescued by Subversive Cinema from that old, pan-&scanned, washed-out version with a fully restored 16:9 anamorphic transfer supervised and approved by Dean Cundey. For the first time since its limited 1976 theatrical release, THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA can be truly appreciated as the "adult swim" it is!

My Opinion:

This is the second release from Subversive Cinema. Again it's another good release with an superb restoration of picture and sound. It's not the greatest movie ever filmed, but it does have it's good moments. In particular, watch out for the NFL star castration scene - though you don't see that much, it leaves anyone male feeling rather uncomfortable. The DVD extras are also very good with an excellent featurette on the making of the film. As can be seen above, there's a lot of text on the back of the case which would have been better if it had been included on the disc. Overall though, another good release from Subversive Cinema.
